Due to the weather, many of the home maintenance tasks that are done in January are often limited to indoor tasks. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t do outdoor projects. When you’re spending more time indoors during the colder parts of the year, keeping the inside of your home safe and comfortable should be as much a priority of yours as the outside.
As you move into the new year, one of the things you want to do is to upgrade your home for your comfort. You want to feel like your house is a sanctuary, and it means that you need to think about what jobs you could be doing this January to make it so. From gutter cleaning to replacing any carpets or loose floorboards, there are always jobs that need to be done in the new year. If you’re getting that itch for a spring clean, why not start with the home maintenance jobs and then go on from there? With that in mind, let’s take a look at some home maintenance tasks you should start right now so that your January productivity levels are through the roof.
- Clean out your indoor vents. Throughout the winter months, you’ll use your heating more often than you would use your cooling, but that can build up dust into your vents in your home. Remembering to clean these vents out is important and you should also do any minor repairs that are needed within those vents. This will keep the indoor air quality of your home at healthy, optimal levels. All you need to do is unscrew the cover from the housing and vacuum out the dust. If you have any washable filters, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and wipe out the cover with a duster.
- Reseal your tub and sink. We talked about gutter cleaning earlier on and that’s due to a buildup of water that can cause leaks in your roof. If you don’t reseal the tub by replacing the caulking around the edge, there’s every chance you’ll end up with leaks and mould and mildew build up. Caulk repair tool kits come with removable tools as well as shaping tools, so you can remove the old caulk and replace it.
- Update your Wi-Fi. January is the month that you need to do a security update with your home. If you have a smart home, any technology like a Ring camera or a Wi-Fi port, you need to make sure that it’s all secure. If you’re working from home, your wireless Internet and any connected devices need to be secure, and it might not yet occur to you to update your device lists and passwords every now and then. January is the time for that to happen, so take a few minutes to check that your current list of connected devices are safe and secure, and that your Wi-Fi has the right virus protection on it.
There may only be three January jobs on this list that you need to get started with, but these three jobs are the ones that are going to make you feel more comfortable as the year moves forward.
