It’s that time of year again: County fair season! Where I’m from, the fair is THE event of the summer. It’s the last hurrah before school starts, and everyone goes. Besides delicious food, nauseating rides, and catching up with old friends, 4-H is big in my hometown. I used to ride in the horse shows, so I practically lived at the fair for a summer each week.
Over the years, I’ve learned a thing or two about how to dress at the fair. Be sure to follow these tips so that you can enjoy your day at the fair to the fullest!
- Bring a lightweight linen scarf (like the rose-colored scarf pictured from Affordable Scarves). During the day, tie the scarf around your bag. You’ll be glad you have a scarf to wrap around your shoulders when the sun goes down!
- Sunglasses are a must for a day in the sun. Make sure your shades block 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. And if you need readers, why not get a pair of sunglass readers? The floral reading sunglasses pictured from Reading Glasses Shopper are adorable!
- Make sure you wear a comfy pair of dark jeans. Light fabrics will get filthy at the fair. I love loose, slouchy shorts from Calvin Klein, like the ones above, because I can roll the up when I’m hot and let them back down when the evening gets chilly.
- A cute tank top like this one from Old Navy will keep you cool during a day walking around in the sun. And when the temps cool off? That’s what the scarf is for!
- Here is an important fair tip: Do NOT wear sandals to the fair. Not only are they bad for a day of walking, but your feet will get dirty. Wear a cute pair of Keds to be stylish and practical.
- A long shoulder bag, like this one from Handbag Heaven, that you can wear across your body is perfect for the fair. It’ll keep your hands free to hold your cotton candy and your roasted corn. This particular bag is perfect: Not too big, not too small, it’s just enough room for money, ride tickets, SPF, and your phone.

I haven’t gone to the fair since I was a teenager. When my daughter gets older I’m thinking we’ll start making a point to go again.
