This past week, we’ve had some pretty rough weather. Lot’s of rain and heavy winds. My rule of thumb is when it’s raining or snowing, with high winds and the roads are wet, then the best tip to give is to stay safe at home. But that’s not always the case. So, if you have to go out in your car for whatever reason, then be sure to take precaution and read on for some basic tips on bad weather driving tips.
Safe Driving Tips For Inclement Weather
- There are a few things you can do to prepare yourself in advance in the event of a bad weather situation. Being proactive is always a good thing but sometimes, bad weather can be so unpredictable. But if you can, before you get into your car and start driving, make sure your vehicle is ready for the weather outside. Checking your tires on a regular basis is helpful to ensure they are properly inflated. Check the car?s battery to make sure it is properly charged and oh a biggie is to make sure there is enough fuel in the tank for the distance you are traveling. My husband also makes sure to check my vehicle?s headlights, antifreeze, windshield wipers, and fluids, etc. Are on the up and up to make to avoid any breakdowns.
- You’ve been told this before but it’s true. In bad weather or otherwise, speed is the most important factor to pay attention to. Always drive slowly and use the brake and accelerator carefully, to avoid skidding.
- Everyone is in a rush these days but bad weather is not the right time to be in a hurry and drive aggressively. Stay in your lane and slow it down.
- Wear your seat belt, not just in bad weather but ALL the time. It?s the most common sense and important safety precaution to put into practice.
- Grip the steering wheel with both hands and move it firmly in the direction you want to go. Also, keep your eyes on road and avoid things that can cause distractions, such as using mobile phones or changing radio stations.
- Obey the signs you see on the road and drive accordingly. The signs have been placed there for your safety and to make you aware of any dangers ahead.
- Even after following all the safety measures, there are still chances for a breakdown to occur. In case that happens always keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. Load all the important tools that you might need in it; we recommend a blanket, first aid kit, rope, jumper cables, flashlight, candle, matches, salt granola bars, drinking water, and cell phone charger.
