I always try to remind my kids just how fortunate and blessed they are. It is important for them to know that although they may not have every thing they want, they do have all the things they need and that there are less fortunate kids around the world that are not as privileged.

as approaches, it is a great time to put into motion what I’ve instilled in them at an early age by showing them they can make a difference in someone?s life. I recently learned of Operation Christmas Child set up by Samaritan?s Purse to get school supplies, clothing, and small toys to less fortunate children around the world at Christmas time. The basic concept is to make shoe boxes filled with practical gifts to fun toys for needy children around the world would otherwise go without.
Participating in Operation Christmas Child is a great teachable moment. It is a way to teach our kids about the loving act of giving while also reminding ourselves what a difference it makes.
The way Operation Christmas Child works is, you take a shoebox or a similarly sized box with a lid and fill it with things from the list on the Samaritan?s Purse website, which includes a list of things that would not only be useful but will bring delight to a child such as toys, school sup?plies, hygiene items and other (sweets, clothing, accessories). You can also choose whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl. Age cat?e?gories are : 2?4, 5?9, or 10?14.
Once your box is filled, you can wrap the box with festive wrapping paper (if you choose), but the lid would need to be wrapped separately. Include $7 for shipping costs, either in the box or online, and take the box to a local drop-off location betweenNovember 12th and 17th.
If you don?t have time to shop and build a box of your own. You can still help change a child?s life by building your box online. You can customize your shoe box gift by selecting gifts from a list of items and adding a personal letter and photo. Your $30 donation will be used to build and send a box, share the love of Jesus Christ, and bless the children around the world through Operation Christmas Child.
The process of putting a box together is really sim?ple and it?s a won?der?ful fam?ily activ?ity to start the hol?i?day sea?son off right! I was so pleased to find out about this problem because it is a great way to teach my boys about compassion and joys of giving.
