Juggling work, socializing and bringing up a family means that I?m often left with little spare time on my hands. When I finally do find a minute or two to put my feet up, I can feel at a complete loss as to what to do with myself. A long soak in the tub or a chance to catch up with some of my favorite TV shows are always welcome additions to my day, but sometimes the things I enjoy can also help to do good and bring a smile to my loved one?s faces.
Here are just a few productive ways that you can spend your down time.
Curl up with a good book
Nothing sounds better than finding a few free minutes to curl up on the sofa, with a good book and a hot cup of tea. Whether you have a stack of books or a Kindle to hand, indulging in a spot of reading is always a great way to pass the time. If you?re a little more short of spare time though, dailylit.com is a fantastic solution for fitting in fifteen minutes of fiction into your daily schedule.
Stay active
Working as a writer, mother, wife, cleaner, chef and chauffeur often means I can leave myself somewhat neglected. Finding an exercise you love and sticking to it will not only make you feel fighting fit, but it also releases endorphins that keep you happy. You don?t even need to fork out for an expensive gym membership. I personally love a bit of home yoga. Just discover what you enjoy and put some of your energy back into investing in yourself.
Do good while you play
If you?re anything like me, then your smartphone is an addictive little gadget for playing. Whether it?s Candy Crush Saga over breakfast or some Angry Birds before bed, I just can?t resist a spot of mobile gaming. But there?s a selection of apps that can actually help you make a huge difference while keeping you entertained. One example is the Play to Cure: Genes in Space app. Developed by Cancer Research UK, in conjunction with Amazon, Google and The Rational Group, the game sees you creating patterns in space. Scientist are then able to use this information to analyse real genetic data and find life-saving cures. Now that?s an app worth downloading.
Bake something delicious
Nothing is sweeter than seeing your kid?s light up as they walk through the door and smell something delicious in the oven. Baking is an amazingly therapeutic hobby, and by the end of it, you have something tasty to tuck into as well. Whether it?s for the school?s bake sale or just for a special dessert, find an easy recipe and whip up a sugary storm in your kitchen. It?s even better if you can rope the husband into doing the washing up after.
Catch up with old friends
It only takes a minute to send a text or make a call to that person you haven?t seen for a while. Losing touch with our friends is worryingly easy in our hectic day-to-day lives, but having a good five minute natter with our close ones will keep the fires of friendship burning. It will also mean a lot to them to finally hear from you again. Put an afternoon aside to catch up over coffee or have dinner together. You won?t regret it.
