October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I’m sure by now, you’re seeing the walks, runs, parties and fundraisers to support research and awareness. Many companies, organizations and private citizens are stepping out in support of the cause.
Breast cancer has touched my family closely. My Mother is a breast cancer survivor and today;she is cancer free for the past 21 years. We are Thankful – Fortunate- Truly BLESSED! I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately…I want to do something –help bring about awareness- support the cause. Big or Small, I will be looking for ways on how I can get involved. For now, I will start by sharing some information with you.
According to the American Cancer Society, every three minutes a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer. It is estimated that there will be 192, 370 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 40,170 deaths from breast cancer in 2009.
Breast Cancer can affect anyone and is the leading cancer among white and African American women, however, according to the The NationalCancer Institute it is said that African American women are more likely to die from this disease. Breast cancer in women has increased from one in 20 in 1960 to one in eight today. This could be due to better tracking and testing, also raised awareness of the disease. That’s why it is so important to protect yourself and do your monthly exams. Be sure to schedule a mammogram. It saves Lifes!
Many companies are getting on board. In support of awareness and research CURE, companies like Mars Snack Foods are lending Sweet Support in the Fight Against Breast Cancer through its M&M’S® and DOVE® Chocolate Brands. Through the limited-edition chocolate candies, Mars Snackfood US will donate a minimum of one million dollars to aid Susan G. Komen for the Cure in their quest to save lives and end breast cancer forever.
Yoplait and Avon Are just a couple of other brands that are taking part in the cause.
