History
For a fun history, stop be sure to check out the Texas State Railroad, Rusk Depot. The Texas State Railroad is a historic 25 mi railroad between Rusk and Palestine, Texas. Founded in 1883 by the state of Texas it was built by inmates and used to haul freight. You can even ride the train or partake in one of their brunches or other events.
Stop by and check out the Mount Vernon African Methodist Episcopal Church. This building is a historic church at 913 East Calhoun Street in Palestine, Texas. It is the third oldest AME church in Texas. The church was organized by freedmen in the early 1870s.
Museums
If inquisitive kids are along on your trip, you will want to check out Curious. While this is not a big museum it is the perfect way to spend the afternoon for little ones. Let them touch and explore their way through the exhibits.
Howard House in Palestine, Texas was built in 1848 by Reuben A. Reeves, Texas State Supreme Court Justice, and justice of the Supreme Court of the New Mexico Territory. It now houses period art and furniture in the Greek Revival style.
The Railroad Heritage Center is not a huge museum. Don’t let its small size full you. A one-room building with a giant model train display and tons information will keep you and the kids occupied for hours though.
The Texas Jail House was built in 1931. It replaced the aging 1800’s jail built at this same location. This more “modern” facility was operational until approximately 1988 when the current county jail was constructed less than a mile away. Now, it hosts haunted and historic tours.
Shopping
If you love antiques, you are going to flip over Duncan Depot Antiques. This 10,000 square foot shopping space is sure to have something for everyone and includes a children’s play area and collections of vintage kitchenware, china, crystal and, furniture.
