My husband is king of the grill in our home. If it can go on the grill, he will cook without complaint. So, when I had the chance to review the Kebab Rack Set and the Steak Station Thermometer, I was very excited? that meant it was Hubby?s night to cook.
I have only ever used bamboo skewers for kebab?s, so I thought a high end kebab rack set would be a great addition to our grilling tools.
Kebab Rack Set
Steven Raichlen Kebab Rack Set In north America, grills have grates, but in much of the world, grilling is done on flat skewers over a grateless grill. This system is especially useful when grilling delicate ground meat kebab’s or fish that is prone to stick to a grill grate. Steven Raichlen Best of Barbecue Kebab Rack raises the skewer-and kebab-above the grate, enabling you to enjoy the experience of grateless grilling on a conventional grill. The notches in the rack hold the skewers steady without slipping or spinning. Use our kebab rack to grill Turkish and Middle eastern kofta kebabs, Central Asian lula and seekh kebab’s, and Asian fish sates. Includes: 2-piece rack and (6) 22.25 x .4 inch skewers. All parts stainless steel. Dishwasher-safe.
My in-laws were in town, and we thought it would be the perfect excuse to test out our new grilling toys tools, so we invited my folks over as well. For the kebab?s, I sliced yellow squash, green and red pepper, zuchinni, and red onions in thick chunks (1-1.5 inches). My Mother-in-law and I skewered all of the vegetables and then I lightly brushed half of the skewers with a dab of extra virgin olive oil and left the remaining skewers plain.
I thought the Steak Station Thermometer would be fantastic, as well. We cook a lot of venison, and it is easy to overcook it.
About the Steak Station Thermometer?
- Monitors preparation of multiple meats
- 4 color-coded probes read and display temperatures
- Allows for perfect rare-to-well-done customization of each juicy steak
- Stainless steel and silicone
- Can be used on the grill and in the oven
After thawing out the venison rounds steaks, I tenderized them with a mallet, then soaked them in a vinegar solution. The vinegar is supposed to help tenderize tougher cuts of meat. We had to rearrange a few things on the grill, because our grill is small. So, after grilling the first set of kebabs, we took the kebab racks off the grill and placed the remaining kebabs on the top rack to allow room for the steaks.
We placed the thermometers in the steaks and began grilling them. While I will eat other meat at a medium to medium-well doneness, it is best to cook venison thoroughly (as it is wild game). The Steak Station let us know when the steaks were ready to pull from the grill, and they were not overcooked. Once the steaks were done, we all enjoyed a fabulous dinner.
The steaks were still a little tougher than I would like, but it had absolutely nothing to do with the steak thermometer. I should have soaked them in the vinegar solution a lot longer than I did, but alas, with two toddlers, I was distracted and didn?t put them in to soak early enough.
I really liked using the kebab skewers, although, we will probably not use the skewer rack next time. The racks are slightly longer than the depth of our grill, so we were unable to close the grill lid with the racks in place. As I mentioned to my husband, when our kids get a little older, we are going to need a bigger grill anyhow.
I would certainly recommend the Kebab Rack Set and Steak Station Thermometer to any grilling enthusiast. I would, however, recommend that you the dimensions of the kebab rack be added to the product description, as I could have skipped the rack and just went with the skewers had I known they would be to long for our grill grate.

Thanks for the plug for the kebab rack, Virginia. I will pass along your suggestion about adding the dimensions to the product description. Merry Christmas!
