It?s a common timeline?your family begins to grow and suddenly your current small car doesn?t cut it. It?s time to upgrade to a family car, but the costs of a new car and the costs of having a baby make used cars a great option. Keep your growing family safe in a used car by looking for these five must-have safety features.
Traction control. Many used cars come with a system that stops wheels from slipping when you apply too much power. There are varying degrees of traction control systems, with some even applying the brakes when you hit a bad traction area. These systems are especially important in areas with wet and slippery driving conditions.
Airbags. Even old cars come with front airbags, but for extra safety, look for cars with side-curtain airbags to help reduce impact to passengers in the back seats. Cars with side airbags have different requirements for where children can sit in the car, so be aware of your car?s specifics.
LATCH anchors. Cars manufactured within the last decade or so should come with a LATCH (lower anchors and tethers for children) system that makes it easier and more secure to install child safety seats. LATCH systems help your child stay in their safety seat if you get in an accident.
