If there’s one thing I know, it’s coffee. Most days, coffee is my drink of choice. The best way to start off my day is with a good cup of coffee.
My most recent coffee maker I?ve owned was the Keurig B60 and I was okay with it, but being the coffee lover I am, I was excited to receive the Remington iCoffee Opus so I could compare the two.
The first thing I noticed was the size. The iCoffee Opus Single Serve Brewer is taller and wider, not taking up too much more counter space, but definitely providing for a taller travel mug and more water capacity. It has a 75-ounce reservoir, which is more than the Keurig.
I have a favorite travel mug that is with me more than it’s not. Since the iCoffee has the innovative Dial-a-Brew control, I can make 12 ounces of perfectly brewed coffee in my travel mug. I cannot tell you how much I love this feature. With the Dial-a-Brew system you can select between 4 ounces to 12 ounces, not only to fit any size coffee cup/mug you have but to get the desired strength of coffee you want. If you like a strong, bold flavor you can set the dial lower and if you want a milder flavor, you can set it higher.
I’m discovering that the absolute best tasting coffee for me is to set the dial between 6.5 – 9.5 ounces. It depends on the brand and type of coffee, but I would have never known this if it were not for the Dial-a-Brew feature. Seriously, the half ounce increments… nice. It also sports an L.E.D display that shows you the ounces being brewed.
The iCoffee Opus comes with a removable cup stand that is magnetic. When you have a large mug you can remove the cup stand, otherwise it stays put and can’t get knocked away so easily since it is magnetic. Honestly, I wouldn’t have thought one way or the other about this, but when you have this feature you realize it’s a good feature to have?if that makes sense.
I love that you can use any and all brand of K-Cups or k-compatible cups with the iCoffee maker and it comes with an iCup, a reusable cup, so you can use your own ground coffee if you wish. I know with a lot of the newer Keurig machines you can only use specific K-cups with its own logo. That’s a bummer. The last thing I want is to be limited to what K-cups I have to buy. Sometimes I want to buy what’s on sale. Maybe you want to buy a generic coffee. With the iCoffee you can.
The iCoffee Opus has what’s called a SpinBrew technology. What this means is, it spins the coffee inside the K-cups as it is brewing for a better-blended taste. In other single-serve coffee makers, the stream of water that goes through a K-cup goes straight down the middle of the cup. The Spin Brew allows water to spray all inside the K-cup to thoroughly mix up the grounds.
I like having my coffee as soon as possible in the mornings. Which leads me to the one thing I’m not crazy about the iCoffee Opus, it takes approximately 30 seconds to heat up the water before it will work. I know, just 30 seconds, but my Keurig was always ready.
Trust me, it isn’t a deal breaker. And with all the fantastic things the iCoffee does and how good the coffee tastes, 30 seconds is nothing and it does heat up fast, though.
Speaking of taste, especially when you find the right dial-a-brew size, is a much smoother, richer, and less acidic tasting cup of coffee than other coffeemakers I’ve tried, including the Keurig. I want to add, though, that when it comes right down to it, I think it’s more about the coffee than it is the brewer. Nothing beats a really good coffee (whether it’s the beans or K-cups).
To sum it up…
Pros:
The Dial-a-Brew system is a huge pro. Not being restricted to just 8 or 10 oz cups of coffee is so nice. Having such a wide range of cup sizes you can brew makes it very handy.
SpinBrew technology gives you a less bitter and?smoother tasting coffee.
The magnetic removable cup stand.
Being able to use ALL K-cups.
It is a nice looking appliance. If you’re going to have a coffee maker on your kitchen counter, the iCoffee Opus is very attractive.
Cons:
There’s no way to adjust water temperature, so it takes the approximate 30 seconds to heat up when it’s not been in use for a bit (like overnight). I do like a really hot cup of coffee, too. As I said, though, this isn’t deal breaker at all.
You can find the Remington iCoffee Opus at Bed Bath and Beyond and now you can find the brewers at Kohl’s and eight other major retailers.
I am impressed so far and look forward to many more delicious, smooth, and aromatic cups of coffee from my iCoffee Opus Single-Serve Brewer. Comparatively with other coffeemakers it is a great price and I would definitely recommend the iCoffee Opus Single-Serve Coffeemaker.
