I have never understood bullying. I am not perfect and have never claimed to be, but I just don’t know why anybody would purposely do something to make another person feel bad about him or herself. Kids have always been mean to one another, but now it is easier than ever. We have facebook, twitter, cell phones, cameras on cell phones, and I am sure I am forgetting something. It is so easy to not only make fun of someone, but advertise it as well.
I am sure kids do it for the same reason they always have. Reasons such as their own insecurities, jealousy, and trying to fit in and be popular. The really sad thing about the entire situation is that kids who are doing the bullying are not emotionally mature enough to understand what they are doing to another human being. We have all seen stories on the news about kids committing suicide because of bullying. For that reason, many schools have a zero tolerance policy for bullying. Still, though, will all the media kids have access to it is hard to monitor these situations. Things can happen and spiral out of control before parents or teachers and administrators have knowledge of what is going on.
When a child/teen bullies another child/teen they aren’t emotionally mature or equipped to realize or judge future consequences. Actions that are based on wanting to fit in and be popular can be devastating for all involved if the target does something, like committs suicide, that can’t be taken back. The participants who were part of the bullying have to live with the guilt of what they did way before they can truly comprehend the consequences of their actions.
What are your thoughts or experiences with this. Have you found ways to better monitor bullying or get the message out? What can be done to stop it before it gets out of control?

I think bullying has only escalated since I was a kid. It’s an expected part of childhood but that’s just sad we expect it since it’s all about learning what’s acceptable behavior.

Kids can be so mean. My grandaugher had a problem with bullying last year, My daughter ended up going to the Principal of the school, she was only 11 yrs old. She also took in pictures off the computer from some of the kids face book accounts and etc. The Principal was excellent. Letters were sent out to all the parents, and she also went to the top to get permission to notify all other schools to follow. I definikately agree that bullying needs to stop. Thanks for your article.

I hate bullies :( I always think “would if someone did that to my kid” and that is NOT okay with me.

I really worry about this. My oldest just started kindergarden but I’m really worried that he will have to deal with bullying. Also I don’t ever want him to be the person bullying. I think it is really important to communicate with your child and let them know that they can speak up and tell a teacher or tell a parent if something is happening. It has only gotten worse since I was a child and it is really sad.

I think a lot of bullies are modeling behavior they’re learning at home. It’s very sad.

I think we are just more aware of bullying but the problem is that some parents and schools are making bullying situations out to be bullies when in all reality it is simply a time to teach children that not everyone will like everyone and not every will be nice, I think there is a fine line between bullying and actually children learning how to be polite.

Love the quote at the end. Bullying is a major problem, but it can be eliminated if parents care to intervene.

Bullying is almost the number ONE no no here in our home. I speak with my kids regularly about how being bullied is NEVER okay and to tell someone. They’re also told that if they ever bully someone for ANY reason they will have harsh consequences.

I think kids today are just awful. I got teased and pushed around when I was younger and it literally tossed me into depression. It makes you afraid to send your kids to school anymore.

It’s so hard to deal with your child being bullied :(

Don’t forget it’s not just children that get bullied, adults do too. So it’s all very well saying ‘kids today’ but it’s not just them. It’s all ages.
