I don’t know about you, but I love walking into a room and a bold piece of home decor catches my attention immediately. A well designed room will have a focal point that will draw attention straight to it. It may be a beautiful view, piece of furniture, or even art work.
What happens if your room lacks a focal point? You just create one. There are many DIY projects that you can make that can add the wow factor to any room in your home.
My daughter needed some type of shelving for her bedroom to display some of her favorite mementos and to help maintain organization, but I wanted something that would add some interest and style to her bedroom. Bookcases are a functional piece of furniture that can be used in so many ways. So why not combine style with form and function.
I decided to take a cheap, white bookcase that was being used in the garage for storage,
and I added colorful, gift wrapping paper to the back of the bookcase to make it more impressive.
My daughter picked out the orange and white stripped wrapping paper to coordinate with her bedroom.
There are many colors and patterns that you can choose from that adds detail to your room.
This DIY project can be completed in 2 simple steps.
Just measure and cut the paper to size, using double sided tape, tape the corners of the paper to the bookcase.
I chose to use gift wrapping paper so when my daughter decides on something new, I can easily remove the tape and add something new.
Gift paper is just one idea, however you can always paint the bookcase with a bold paint color, stencil a cool pattern to the back, or use wall paper or fabric to add a whimsical or elegant touch.
Martha Stewart showcases this eye catching gray and orange painted book case.
This bookcase not only adds style to this room, but it acts as the focal point of the room.
It doesn’t have to be a white bookcase, any bookcase can be turned into a beautiful show piece.
Bookcases can always be found at your local thrift shops and used throughout your home. They are a great home decor accessory to help with organizing and containing clutter. Bring one to life by adding a bold color or pattern and make it the focal point of any room.

I would be worried about it ripping…have you seen any wear and tear on it? I guess its easy enough to replace though! I love the idea of painting the back too. For some reason I had it in my mind that the paper was going to be mod podged on there (probably because I have a love relationship with mod podge…haha) Very cool idea!!

What a great idea! We’re moving soon and will be buying some ‘plain’ IKEA bookcases to store some things in our living room, I’d love to bring it up a notch with doing something like adding wallpaper to the back of them! Thanks for sharing.

never thought about using wallpaper. That definitely is a good idea when things need some updates. We have some old bookshelvs that I think this would be perfect for!
