Snacking has gotten a bad rap. When most people think of snacks, they picture over-processed junk food full of high fructose corn syrup and trans fats. But, snacking on low-calorie foods can actually help you lose weight!
As you probably heard from your mom when you were growing up, snacking can take away your appetite at mealtimes. If you?re trying to lose weight, this is good! Snacking can also give you an energy boost to help you stay active.
So, what are some of these mysterious low-calorie snacks? They?re all ordinary foods you can pick up from your local grocery store. Some of these snack tips come from Good Housekeeping magazine.
Here are just 8 examples of snacks with 100 calories or fewer:
1. 3 cups of air-popped popcorn with I Can?t Believe It?s Not Butter! Spray.
If you think popcorn is too fattening, you?re probably used to the over-priced, over-buttered popcorn sold at movie theaters. You can keep your weight?and your credit card balance?down by making your own air-popped popcorn at home.
Three cups of typical air-popped popcorn has about 90 calories. You can flavor it with I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! Spray, which won?t add a single calorie.
2. One heaping cup of blueberries.
Blueberries are a low-calorie, low-acid treat. To make them even more fun to eat, put them in a Ziploc baggie and stick them in the freezer overnight. They will come out like candy!
A cup of blueberries has under 85 calories.
3. 29 pistachios.
Pistachios not only make a good snack because they?re low in calories, but because they keep you busy long enough to calm down cravings.
You can enjoy 29 pistachios without going over 100 calories.
4. 20 sugar-free mints.
Eating one mint at a time will slowly chip away at your junk food cravings. Plus, your breath will smell great!
Your average sugar-free mint has 5 calories.
5. A 6 ounce cup of fat-free yogurt with 1/3 cup raspberries.
This makes a nice breakfast. Dannon?s Light ‘n Fit Nonfat Yogurt is a good choice, with about 80 calories per container. Raspberries have about 60 calories per full cup.
So, this snack has around 100 calories.
6. 40 pretzel sticks.
If you know you?re going to be tempted to grab a hamburger when you pick up the kids from school, put a baggie of pretzel sticks in your purse. When the urge hits, you can gnaw it away.
40 Rold Gold Classic Style pretzel sticks won?t put you above 100 calories.
7. Sugar-free jelly beans.
You can use gourmet flavored jelly beans to trick yourself into thinking you?re breaking your diet. If you?ve been pining away for certain high-calorie foods, buy jelly beans of that flavor instead!
Each jelly bean has around 2 calories.
8. 10 baked corn chips and ? cup salsa.
Who doesn?t like chips and salsa? To make this treat seem bigger, put the salsa in a small, shallow bowl. If you see the bowl filled to the top, you?ll feel like you?re getting plenty.
Pick up Guiltless Gourmet?s Baked Yellow Corn Chips for this snack. 10 of them served with a typical salsa is safely under the 100 calorie mark.
These snacks all go well with a tall glass of ice water. Drinking more water during the day will help you feel full. Your body will have to use a few calories to warm up the ice water, and when you?re trying to keep your weight down, every little bit helps.
