Which sounds really scary, doesn’t it? But really, there’s nothing more annoying than pouring time, money and energy into making a room look gorgeous, only to watch it slowly fall apart in real time. Like, maybe you blame yourself at first, like maybe you accidentally bought a bad brand of paint, the wallpaper just wasn’t on the way it supposed to be, or things like that. Sure, that can happen of course.
But usually it’s the insulation, well, not always, but a good chunk of the time it is. When you winterize your home, you’re only thinking about the warmth factor, but insulation seriously does so much more than you might even realize.
How Much Condensation are You Dealing With?
Condensation seems tiny, right? A bit of mist on the windows, a patch of damp near an outside wall, nothing dramatic. But that moisture has to go somewhere, and it usually goes straight into the surfaces that were supposed to stay pretty. Nope, it’s true, so, those cold walls mixed with warm, humid indoor air is basically an invitation for water to sit where it absolutely shouldn’t. Hence, why you might see some yellowish stains on the wall, bubbled up and chipped paint, and even plastered walls that are flasking.
Yeah, obviously, all of these things make a home, well, any room look hideous, and it’s a major problem as well. So chances are, those walls might have next to no insulation in them. And in that case, you absolutely need to reach out to a licensed insulation contractor because this problem is only going to get worse, and more things in your home will get damaged too.
Dealing with Peeling Wallpaper and Warped Floors?
Well, you probably already know this, but yeah, wallpaper has zero patience for damp (hence why you aren’t supposed to put it in bathrooms). Since it curls, lifts, and peels if the wall behind it keeps getting hit with moisture. Sure, sometimes it can be a bad job, or bad glue, but a good chunk of the time it’s going to be due to all the moisture in the room, just bad conditions overall.
But it’s not only going to be the walls, be it wallpaper, plaster, or paint, it’s also going to be the floors too. Like, are there parts of the floor that feel questionably soft? Are you noticing your floors are warped? Well, warm air, cold surfaces, trapped dampness basically means that in due time, it’s all going to get worse.
Are You Seeing Mold Behind Furniture?
One of the big problems with mold is the fact that you don’t always see it in plain sight, not always, but usually it’s hidden. It’s honestly pretty common for it to be hidden around furniture, like your wardrobe, bookshelf, or sometimes in your closet in nooks and crannies. Obviously, this is awful for decor, but it’s especially worse for just general health and allergies.
Well, that, and kids, pets, or just a basic dislike of breathing in spores. Sure, bleach can wipe it away for a bit, sure, but if the wall’s still cold and damp behind the scenes, the mold is still there, well, thanks to moisture, it’s going to come back.
