Fitness Motivation: Tips To Get You Up, Get You Out & Get You Active

I don’t think I’m alone when I say my exercise intentions are much better than my exercise actions. I have big plans to hit the gym, train for a race, and get active, but life gets busy and the first things to slip are my workouts.

Now that my kids are back in school, I’m excited to get back into a real schedule, and adding regular exercise is on the top of my list. When I work out, I have so much more energy and confidence—it definitely makes me a better wife and mom when I take a little time for myself at the gym. Not to mention, I love feeling strong and healthy after a good workout and seeing how great my legs look in my new skirt!

Exercising is definitely a physical and emotional roller coaster, but here are my top tips for staying motivated:

Set real goals. Over the years, I’ve found I’m much more successful in reaching my goals when they are real and measurable. Instead of just saying, “I’m going to work out”, I make a plan to run three times a week or lose a certain number of pounds. Working towards something measurable makes a huge difference.

Look good. I’m so much more motivated to hit the gym when I look good and am comfortable. I feel better and work harder when I have stylish and fun workout clothes and gear. My favorite trends right now are bright prints and fun graphic tank tops.

Be regular. Life is crazy, so I have to set aside time and made exercise a priority or it won’t happen. For me, it’s getting up early and going to the gym before the kids and my husband get up. Exercising at the same time everyday is good for your body and your mind.

Make it fun. I love trying new classes at the gym, while other people enjoy a good at-home workout. The key to regular exercise is to make it something you look forward to. From running to Pilates to water aerobics, there are a ton of exercise possibilities—you just have to find what works best for you.

Go with a friend. Holding yourself accountable is huge. I’m much less likely to skip spin class when I have a friend I know is waiting for me. Plus, we get to catch up on girl talk while we burn calories!

What are your tips to exercise success?

  1. There is almost nothing that can get me motivated to exercise. I used to–then I over did it and ended up in physical therapy for months-my shoulder is still not all that good and it has been years now! I suppose I could try to at least walk a bit——

  2. Scott says:

And move to a warmer climate. I hate getting to the gym in the middle of winter. Would rather stay in my warm bed.

  3. Great tips! I agree if you pair up with a friend you are less likely to skip because you are not just failing yourself but them too. Then you may be giving them an “out” not to go as well! I also agree about setting reasonable and measuring exercise expectations! I agree with all of your tips actually! Great post and good reminder to take time for ourselves!

  4. Rosey says:

Real and measurable is important for goals. And it leaves you feeling better at the end of the day too because they’re something you know you can accomplish.
