5 Ways to Get Free Wi-Fi Everywhere

The way our lives work today, it would seem like we can’t survive without being hooked to the internet. Like it has morphed into some sort of a digital life line that we could not go through our day without.

I mean, how can you upload the super adorbs shot you took of your little one when you dropped her off this morning in school? That precious little smile simply needs to be posted in Facebook, stat! Or how can you post the truly drool-worthy photo of your yummy meal at the swankiest new restaurant in town when you couldn’t even connect to the net that instant?

Not to mention the check-ins in Foursquare to let your friends know where you are, or the quick post in Get Glue when you’re watching the latest flick. These things simply cannot wait. And oh, of course, you have to Google some stuff every now and then.

Yep, we’ve all been there. Stuck someplace with no wi-fi to connect to. Sigh. We feel you, sisters. But don’t worry, we’re giving you tips on how to get wi-fi everywhere — for free!

  1. Two words: HOTSPOT DATABASE!

Ever heard of WeFi? It’s a global hotspot database that currently has more than 190 million entries! You can simply check out their maps and find yourself the nearest hotspot. The good news is, it’s super easy to use. The even better news is, it has an app for android and iPhone! How cool is that?

Other top hotspot locators are: jiwire and wi—fi freespot.

  1.  Know the different places that offer free wi-fi.

Public libraries, airports, coffee shops, hotel lobbies, cafes, cellular phone shops, malls, big business chains like Starbucks & McDonald’s, and so much more. Make a mental list of these places. You’ll be surprised to find that there’s too many of them!

  1. Loyalty Programs and Coupons? Yes please!

Businesses do know their customers a lot because loyalty programs and vouchers now include free wi-fi as its perks! Hooray! Keep an eye out for different kinds of deals . This needs a lot of vigilance and smarts, but when the time comes that you need to hook up with some wi-fi when you’re out and about, it will be so worth it!

  1. Tethering your mobile phone

In case you still aren’t aware of the powers of your smartphone, now is the time to get to know it better. You can actually turn your nifty little mobile device into a wi-fi source! There are different tethering apps that you can use for iphone and android phones, but most android devices (android 2.2 and up) already have them ready to go with no jailbreak or rooting needed.

Once your phone is ready, you can use its 3G or 4G connection as a wi-fi source for your other devices. Just remember that: (1) if you do not have free data subscription in your mobile phone, your phone bills could skyrocket, so check it first with your carrier; and (2) the wi-fi connection will most likely be slower than the regular wi-fi connections you’re used to.

  1. Find out about your internet service provider’s offers

In some cases, internet companies set up free wi-fi hotspots in different areas for their customers’ free usage. Take for example iiNet which has set up wireless internet hotspots all over the Perth CBD. If you’re one of their customers, this means you can avail of their free wi-fi hotspots in the area! Super cool, right?
